Common sense factor: Because the
fence panels are supported by the larger posts, the post must be
placed in a secure setting. Posts may be screwed directly to part
of the house in which case the post will not be going into the ground.
This requires you to cut some off the bottom of the post, with a
hacksaw to accommodate the height of the fence. The L brackets can
be used to hold the post to the corner of the house or deck post.
All other free-standing posts must be placed into earth. Driving
a post in Georgia soil is sufficient, but for additional strength
concrete can be used. The fence panels that are installed are built
and designed to follow the general grade of the property area to
be enclosed. This is achieved by "racking" the panel by
standing on one end of the bottom horizontal rail and pushing the
top rail away from you until you have reached the desired angle.
The key here is to obviously keep all of the verticals perfectly
level in the vertical postion. In other words the horizontal rails
will follow the angle of the grade while keeping the pickets straight
up and down. Now on to the panels. they are held in place using brackets
that mount to the posts you have placed. It is much easier if you
place a post then a panel then another post etc. Enough for common
sense lets get to work.
Installation of
Xtreme Fence
1.) You need a guide
to remind you of where you have decided to run the fence. This is
done with wood stakes and string (where applicable). Run the string
from stake to stake. Stakes need to be placed at the starting point
and at every corner or break in a normal straight run. For example
if you are going toward the rear of your property with the fence
and then decide to start curving around a flower bed, it is smart
to place a stake where you intend on placing each post in that particular
run. Once it straightens back out, you can continue putting stakes
at the end of any straight run. Once the stakes are in place connect
all the stakes with string (must be nylon string so it can be tensioned.
Needs to be pulled very, very tight).
2.) Start now with
installing 1" post (see Diagram) If 1" post is to be placed
in earth you need a post hole digger to open up a hole 12" deep.
Once that is dug out place the post into the hole and using a driver
tube (available for $15 at Home Depot or Lowes) pound the post down
into the ground another 12". If this is done correctly, you
are left with approximately 60" of post above normal grade.
3.) Now take a section
of fence. You want to install the poly-finials on top of each picket
before mounting the panel to the post. NOTE: One end of the pickets
have a smoother cut than does the other end. Be sure to install the
finials on the smoother of the cut ends of the pickets. The finials
are installed by taking a pair of channel-locks and gripping the
base of the finial, placing on the end of the picket and with a household
hammer, tap down on the channel-locks which forces the finial to
be installed over the picket end. Occasionally a deformed finial
hole will fight the operation. It is best to throw it away and get
another. You may choose to take a sharp knife and carve part of the
hole out to make it fit. Be sure to wear safety goggles when driving
these finials in place in case one shatters and hits you in the eye.
4.) Now take this
finished panel turn it upside down (finials on the bottom end) and
install the L brackets to the end of the rails as shown (see
diagram).
5.) Turn the section
right side up and center it side to side on the post and screw it
to the 1" post. There is no mystery to fence, we follow a very
simple rule of thumb. When installing a fence it simply must look
good and straight. Rule is, if it looks good it is and if it looks
bad it is bad. Make sure you follow the string line (this is the
key to sucess). Run a string near the top of the post and another
near the bottom of the post.
6.) Once you have
screwed one end of the section to the 1" post, align the section
to follow the grade (described in 1st paragraph) secondly align the
section to align with the strings. once it is in this correct position,
grab the next post and place it flat against the other end of the
section and mark the spot on the ground where it is to be dug out.
Drop that post and using your hip, push the loose end of the section
out of your way so that you may dig hole #2. That's it.
7.) GATES: gates will
hang on one post and latch to the other post. Use the supplied hinges
along with self tapping screws and mount them to the hanging post.
Next grab the gate and align it squarely between the two gate posts
and fasten the other end of the hinges to the side gate frame. The
gate is now freely hanging and all is left is to screw the latch
assembly in place. It is recommended that you screw the latch bar
up high toward the end of the horizontal gate frame. Keeps kids out.
Once this is done, place the latch in the bar catch area and clamp
it in place until the four screws are set.
8.) Touch-up painting
is required along with painting all of the silver galvanized hardware.
9.) Next send us a
picture of your installation, we may want to hire you to help install.
10.) After all fence
is installed, go back and fill the hole with Quikrete cement (yellow
bags) and water it down. The cement will harden in 1-2 days. Remove
excess dirt, your done.
11.) If you are installing
using the larger 4" X 4" posts you will need to cut 1 foot
off of the bottom and place it over a driven 1-1/2" post with
the outside wall of the bigger post snug up alongside the smaller
post so that the top screws go through both posts. Put the excess
dirt from the hole inside the bigger post and place cap on top of
the post. Done!
